The best ERP for a job shop depends on what kind of shop you run

On most of our demo calls, the shop owner already has two or three systems on a shortlist, they've read a handful of "best ERP" pages, and every one of those pages was written by a vendor who ranked themselves first.

This one is written by a vendor too. We're Tangle. But we've tried to write the page we'd want to read if we were buying: the systems job shops actually ask us about, who each one is built for, and the cases where we think you should buy something else.

Every description of another vendor below comes from that vendor's own website, checked in November 2026. Where we've written a full side-by-side comparison, it's linked.

Start with your shop, not the software

Before you look at any vendor, it helps to answer a few questions about your own shop. They'll narrow the list faster than any feature grid.

  • Do you make to order, or make to stock? A shop running high-mix, make-to-order work needs routings, quoting and scheduling by machine. A business that makes and ships its own products from stock needs inventory first.
  • Who will change the system when your process changes? Your own team, the vendor's consultants, or a developer you pay by the hour. This decides how the system feels in year three, not week three.
  • Where do your books live? Some ERPs include accounting. Others sit beside QuickBooks. Neither is wrong, but moving your accounting at the same time as your shop floor is a bigger project.
  • What does compliance look like for you? Aerospace, defense and medical shops often buy around AS9100, ITAR or traceability first and everything else second.
  • How will you get off what you run today? All at once on a set date, or a piece at a time with the old system still running.

If you run a small job shop

Most "best ERP" lists are written with a 500-person plant in mind. If you've got 10 to 40 people, a handful of machines and an owner who still quotes half the jobs, the questions are different.

  • Can you get live without a consultant on site for months? Ask who does the setup, what it costs, and whether it's in the price.
  • Can the person who needs a change make it? In a small shop there's no IT department. If every new field or report means a ticket to the vendor, it won't get done.
  • Does the price make sense for the people who use it? Shop-floor staff who clock time on jobs shouldn't cost the same as the people who quote and schedule.
  • Will it work with the books you already keep? Most small shops run QuickBooks and don't want to move their accounting at the same time.
  • Can it grow with you? The system you pick at 15 people should still fit at 60 without a reimplementation.

Tangle is built for this size of shop. If you want the full picture of how it fits a high-mix shop, start with our job shop ERP guide. Pricing is published by user type, with a lower price for shop-floor users. Setup is normally included. And Milo, Tangle's built-in AI engineer, lets the people in the shop make everyday changes themselves. How Milo works

The systems, one by one

Listed alphabetically, Tangle included.

Epicor Kinetic

Built for: Epicor describes Kinetic as specialized for discrete, make-to-order manufacturing. Changing the system: Configuration in Epicor's Application Studio. AI: Delivered as named products, such as Epicor Prism, alongside Kinetic. Worth knowing: Epicor has announced that its final on-premise Kinetic release, 2028.1, is tentatively scheduled for January 2028, with Active Support running to December 31, 2029. If you run Kinetic on-premise, a decision is coming either way. Worth a look if: You're a larger or multi-business manufacturer that will use the breadth. Tangle vs Epicor Kinetic

Fulcrum

Built for: A modern platform with real strength in metal fabrication. Changing the system: Configuration within the platform, plus Archie Build, still an early release, for custom tools on Fulcrum data. AI: Archie, built into Fulcrum. Fulcrum publishes frequent product updates, many of them to Archie, and offers an MCP server so outside AI tools can read and write Fulcrum data. Worth a look if: You run a fabrication shop and already work close to the way Fulcrum works. It's a serious product. Tangle vs Fulcrum

Global Shop Solutions

Built for: Shops that want an established, broad all-in-one system with a large installed base. Accounting is included. Changing the system: Configuration by Global Shop's consultants. Genii Build, part of its AI suite, creates dashboards and automations from plain-language requests. AI: The Genii suite (Chat, Assist, Extract, Build and Pulse), plus AI for accounts payable and sales order entry. Getting started: Implementation through Global Shop's own consultants. Worth a look if: You want one long-established system to run everything, the books included. That's a reasonable choice. Tangle vs Global Shop Solutions

JobBOSS²

Built for: Job shops. ECI formed JobBOSS² from E2 Shop System and JobBOSS. Changing the system: Modifications through ECI's custom development team, part of its professional services. AI: Task-specific tools, such as an AI assistant and AI BOM Builder, which reads bills of materials from PDFs, spreadsheets and images. ECI has also announced AI Invoicing for JobBOSS². Worth knowing: ECI lists the older E2 and JobBOSS products as being for existing customers. We found no announced end-of-life date, so nobody is being forced off. If you're on one of the older products, you're probably already weighing a move. Worth a look if: You're on JobBOSS² now and it still bends to how your shop works. JobBOSS² alternative

Katana

Built for: Product brands. It's inventory-led, though its industry list includes industrial equipment. Scheduling: Order-priority scheduling: you drag manufacturing orders up or down the production queue. Changing the system: Custom fields (an early release), plus an API and an MCP server for AI tools. Katana also offers personalization as a service: its team runs discovery, design, scoping and build to fit the software to how your business runs. Worth a look if: You make and ship your own products from stock. For that business, Katana is a sensible shape. Tangle vs Katana

ProShop

Built for: Precision machine shops and precision manufacturers, with a focus on aerospace, defense, medical and space. It covers ERP, MES and quality management in one platform. AI: Chip, which ProShop describes as the AI built for precision manufacturing. Compliance: ProShop's site highlights AS9100 for aerospace and ITAR-compliant workflows for defense. Worth a look if: You're a precision machine shop and compliance is the center of your buying decision.

Steelhead

Built for: Job shops in finishing and related processes, including powder coating, plating and anodizing, painting, thermal spray, galvanizing, chemical processing and heat treatment, plus fabrication and general manufacturing. AI: Sonar, an AI assistant built into the system. Worth a look if: You run a finishing or heat-treat shop and want software built around those processes.

Tangle

Built for: Small and mid-size job shops doing high-mix, make-to-order work, roughly 10 to 200 people. Changing the system: Describe the change to Milo, Tangle's built-in AI engineer. It builds the workflow, form, report or automation, you preview it in a sandbox, and it goes live once you approve it. No configuration quote or change order for everyday changes. Scheduling: Load by machine and department, with conflicts flagged. Accounting: Connects to QuickBooks Online out of the box. Invoices, purchase orders and payments are pushed to QuickBooks, so your books stay where they are. Tangle and QuickBooks Getting started: We set up your first build with you, and the core setup is normally included in the price. With Off Ramp, your old system keeps running while its data syncs into Tangle, so you can go live a piece at a time. Pricing: Published on our website by user type. See pricing

When Tangle is the wrong choice

We'd rather you found this out here than three months into a project.

  • You make and ship your own products from stock. You need an inventory-led system first. Look at Katana.
  • You want your accounting inside the ERP. Tangle sits beside QuickBooks rather than replacing it. If one system for everything, books included, matters most, Global Shop Solutions is built for that.
  • You're a large or multi-plant group. Tangle is built for shops of roughly 10 to 200 people, and a broader ERP will likely serve you better.
  • You're a finishing or heat-treat shop. Steelhead is built specifically around those processes. Compare it carefully against anyone, us included.

How to compare ERPs in a demo

A few things that cut through a polished demo, whoever you're talking to:

  1. Bring one real job. Ask them to run it from quote to invoice in front of you, with your routing, not their sample data.
  2. Ask who makes changes, and how long they take. "Can it do X?" is the wrong question. "If we need X next March, who builds it, what does it cost and when do we get it?" is the right one.
  3. Ask what's included in implementation. Get the services cost in writing, separate from the license.
  4. Ask how you'd get off your current system. All at once, or in stages with the old system running? What happens to your history?
  5. Ask what happens to your data if you leave. You want a clear answer on export before you sign, not after.

Best ERP for job shops: FAQs

What is the best ERP for a small job shop?

It depends on whether you make to order or to stock, who you want changing the system, and whether you need accounting built in. For a shop of 10 to 40 people, setup cost and who makes changes usually matter more than feature count. Use the small job shop questions and the quick guide above to narrow it down, then run one real job through each finalist.

Is this list biased?

It's written by Tangle, so read it that way. We've kept every claim about other vendors to what their own websites say, and we've listed the cases where we'd point you elsewhere.

Do I need an ERP with accounting built in?

Not necessarily. Many job shops keep QuickBooks for the books and use an ERP for quoting, jobs, scheduling and inventory. That way the finance side doesn't have to change at the same time as the shop floor.

How long does it take to switch ERPs?

It depends on the shop and how much you move at once. Moving in stages, with your old system running alongside, takes the pressure off a single go-live date.

Can I use AI with the ERP I already have?

Some vendors offer AI tools on top of their own products. Tangle Xray puts AI on top of a shop's existing ERP; it's a limited release for shops selected on fit. Join the Xray waiting list

What it costs, and what is included

Our prices are on our website, by user type, so you can work out what Tangle would cost your shop before you talk to anyone. The core migration and setup work needed to get live is normally included in that price, with no separate services bill for the basics, and we support running your old system in parallel until you are ready to switch.
